Vacay Time with Kids

I feel called to local church ministry, but if there is any time to try something new and see what is there, it is when Duke University offers to pay for it. Thus for the final summer internship of my M.Div. degree, I will be working as a chaplain’s intern at a youth prison facility. Informally, I will be available to hang out with kids, go to random meetings with my supervisor, and be given strange looks by staff who don’t yet recognize the strapping young chaplain with the ponytail. Formally, I will be leading three Bible studies during the week and doing some kind of church on Sunday afternoons.

Eventually we will use a printed curriculum called Rings of Fellowship, but until then I am in charge of coming up with what we do each week. After we start, I will still be in charge of developing curriculum, I suppose, given that although Rings was developed for youth prison populations, its content (like its title, apparently chosen a few years ago when all those urban youth were really into the Lord of the Rings movies) seems to better meet the needs and evidence the cultural concerns of white middle class middle schoolers.
Rings provides workbooks for each student to fill out each week at home then we gather to watch a short DVD segments featuring a clean Christian comedian (also painfully white) to watch together each week. Let’s just say that the DVD segments will be the first thing to go.  Witness a segment by the same guy, although not a segment from the same series.

Updates will follow, but just know for now that the kids are great, albeit not in every sense of the word.
